I don't think the value/loss of interest in WWII generation cars is a good litmus test for air-cooled. Those cars are extremely antiquated and pretty much useable in modern traffic. Anything (esp pcars) made over the past few decades still have the safety features and modern refinement be enjoyed today. Huge difference in appeal.
As for 911 v. 308, the Ferrari has definitely appreciated in value but they aren't "hot" right now like the 911 market. In many cases 911 values have even surpassed the Ferrari. If you want a very nice G50 Coupe, you'll probably pay more for it than an equivalent 328. I'm lucky enough to own and love both, but will concede that the vintage Ferrari's tend to look better than they drive. Blast to drive one weekend a month for an hour, then you can't wait to get out of it. The 911 is an all around superb machine and prices now reflect that.
