Also, try out your mask before the trip. In my experience, the different types of n95's vary depending on brand. Some are relatively comfortable, some are pure torture in terms of fit.

We had 1000 n95's donated to our local health clinic. Within 5 minutes, everyone knew why. They were awful. Even with modifying straps, they were unuseable. No wonder they were a "gift"

Also, use kn95's with a grain of salt. In my experience, they are more difficult to get a seal due to the straps. They filter fine, IF you can get a seal. The straps can be cut/modified to fit more like a regular n95.

If you have a bunch of n95's go right ahead and use them. If I only had one or two for the entire trip, I would (minority opinion here ) consider wearing a type one mask over it, so long as breathing is not an issue. It won't make the mask more effective filtration wise, but it would theoretically keep it cleaner for extended use. I have/and do wear surgical mask over n95's all the time. If I had to wear the same n95 with your relatives as the one on the plane, I'd consider covering it, then ditching the surgical type mask when the flight is over. Earlier in the year, we had access to n95's with exhaust valves, so I'd cover the the whole thing with a regular mask. Not fun, but none of this is.

I would consider a face shield, but also, if you are worried, but don't want to go that far, also consider wearing a baseball style cotton hat (if they are allowed. Keeps yo' noggin' clean.) and glasses. Looks low key. From my limited knowledge, the face shield would get 95% or so of the original cough, and after a while still prevent 25% of stuff getting through, which is weird (in the long duration sense) since it is pretty much open. I think MRM is right about the shielding on a plane, it's not like you are face to face with people like health care workers are, unless boarding/ etc. I would probably wear glasses/hat, but that's just me. Perhaps an ultra lightweight windbreaker as well. I would also wear my face shield, but my only concern would be bumping into things with it. Not a huge concern, and it's interesting to hear that people are wearing them. I wouldn't worry one bit about the cool factor. As for that-

I'd wear glacier glasses from the 80's with the leather side shields!
