Ceramic coating will seal the surface. If the paint surface is pristine, then it will work well. If not, then you will seal in any dust etc.

I had my '87 928 done:
1) buffing to remove oxidation layer
2) polishing with finer and finer compound
3) careful and thorough cleaning of surface
4) application of ceramic coating, allow to "dry and set"
5) mild polishing
.
The surface looks better now, than when it came from factory.
