I hope so too, but I'm not optimistic. He has a lot of just plain bad luck, but also a lot of self-inflicted bad luck. He parked his wrecked truck next to his barn - about 100 yards away from the house. The thieves had a lot of interest in the truck. They convinced him they could make it driveable again (no way in hell). They stole the key to the barn, and spent a lot of time back there. MrsWD saw them drive out with the lights off at about midnight one night last week, when D. was in bed asleep. They are both convicted drug dealers. Who wouldn't put two and two together and conclude that they were stashing product back there, either in the truck on in the barn? The sheriff deputy is scheduled to come out as soon as he can with the county's drug sniffing dog to see if our theory is correct. So D. calls a junker and has the truck hauled away.
There goes possible evidence, and maybe some of the stuff they stole from him. The sheriff is really bending over backwards to help and he just gets in the way. It's easy to say, "I give up," but so hard to actually abandon him.
