It is quite simple. When we run out of everything else. When we find that solar and wind don't provide nearly enough power. When we decide that hydrogen fusion only makes sense in stars. When we reach the end, we will finally decide that nuclear fission isn't that bad after all.
And we'll use fission until we figure out the "final" power source: direct matter to energy conversion.
