sounds like you had a sheltered existence

we threw knives at each other's feet, and "explored" the swamp full of dangerous snakes, and snapping turtles; rumored gator back there but we never saw it

once we put this big turtle in some kids little red wagon and played with it - I stuck a stick about the size of a broom stick near it and it bit the stick in half - that's how I learned it was a snapping turtle

also stinging caterpillars - nobody died from them but the pain was amazing
also, played with baby snakes - found out later they were water moccasins
