I've got a buddy that's the same way for kraut and, I think anything cabbage related. His family is Hungarian, and I guess the smell of his grandmother cooking cabbage and kraut was the same for him.
I make sauerkraut. We normally eat it cold, but sometimes we heat it up. I've never noticed that strong a smell. I know that some folks will cook cabbage with vinegar and call that a kind of kraut too.
