Carrying a knife in South Australia will get you a $10,000 fine and/or two years in jail. This law was introduces about 25 years ago as a response to several stabbings were a chef or cooking knife was used. There was a gang war raging at the time (turf and drugs). A cop told me they would leave the knife in place rather than pull it out because it lessens the chance of someone bleeding to death so there would be no murder investigation. And a chef or cooking knife is relatively cheap compared to a fighting knife.
What disturbed me the most about these stabbings? - They used "maim but not kill" tactics. Which means they were organised crime related and premeditated.
