I pulled my GPS from the closet to update it with a fresh map download. I plugged it into the computer and it booted up, said low battery, and then went dead. It is now a brick. It will not wake up when plugged into the computer or a 12 volt power connector. Crap. So I get to get a new GPS. It was pretty old, at least 10 years old so it have been on many trips with me. Ah well.

I have a new one set to be here tomorrow. The new one will have more modern features. The one thing I bet it still does not have is a "Keep me out of the ghetto" mode. My old one would pull up a list of gas stations ahead, and happily drive me into the areas I do not want to be in. Even worse, if I ask how to get to a place, it would take me through Chicago south side down city streets rather than interstate and go two miles further.

My first GPS was a Lorance version that had a Scenic route" mode. It found some great mountain roads.

And yea, my phone has a GPS and can do a lot of those things, but it needs a cell signal that is not always available like a GPS signal. In Florida my brother and I were trying to get back to the hotel and the road was closed. He pulled out his phone, I used my phone and the GPS as well to get to the hotel. We had three women's voices bi*tching at us to go three different ways at one intersection. I finally said screw it, and I did a 180 and went back to the main road and I could see our hotel in the distance. All of sudden all three of the devices agreed with my sense of direction and gave us the same directions. The GPS did not see the road ahead was closed for construction, and the two phones had different paths that just were a trip around the block and back to the same spot.
