Funny you should mention that. Slight idle roughness on a 2014 Honda CR-V on Monday. Got my search on and forum guys were bee-otching about how the gap from the factory was a few thousandths smaller than the recommended 0.044". Opening them up to 0.045" from 0.042" made a difference they said AND the difference noted was exactly as you said. Performance up, fuel mileage static.
I did that and it noticeably smoothed out and owner agreed. I did clean off the MAF as well so I can't quite take that to the bank as a certainty but I am now aware.
