I have two Siberian Huskies that are retained in about 3.5 acres of my yard with underground fence and the 9 volt battery powered "stubborn" dog shock collars set on high and my fence controller is set on high. One was trained a puppy with no issues but the other I got when 2 years old and she was took a bit more time to train. Just have to remember to keep the collars tight and check the batteries every couple months. They have free roam of the property by day and even go in the pond and the collars work.
I used to keep them in a chainlink fence dog run during the workday when we weren't home, but the female learned to jump off the doghouse and over the fence. At that point I just decided to trust the underground fence and it has worked now over a year.
The stock wire that comes in the kit is crap, so I reburied 10 ga solid wire a couple years ago and have no breaks in the wire since. I built a three point hitch mounted wire burying tool and it puts the wire in even through stone driveways without issue.
