I ponder this every time I do an in tank fuel pump . Yesterday, I pulled one out of a 2009 cobalt, where there must have been high resistance right at the fuel pump connector on the pump submerged in fuel .
It got hot enough to melt the plastic connector, and turn the metal spades, purple .
Even though it is submerged, I am sure that under certain conditions, fuel would slosh and expose this to oxygen .
Is it possible ? I have never heard of it happening, and this is the only time I have ever seen anything like it .
