I don't want to get into his family politics too much. He was the youngest child and all the other kids had left home already, so he was much younger. His mom had remarried so he is a 1/2 brother to most of the family. He worked at the family business for pretty much his entire life. Most of the family is very religious and Richard never was. That caused a lot of friction and Richard was his own man, and lived his life as he wanted and did not conform to other's wishes or his actions. As an outsider I only heard his side and he never spoke bad things about his family at all, but he did mention friction typical of most all families.
