My wife volunteers with FIRST (high school robotics competitions) as a mentor. This FIRST organization is supported by Dean Kamen (Segway inventor). So, of course, at any event the VIPs can be seen scooting around on these Segway things.
Amusingly, all that does is breed disgust for them amongst the kids and the volunteers...they're seen as toys for the idle rich. Worse is that you have to get out of the way for them because the riders usually travel at high speeds in foot-traffic-only areas, and the device is much wider (and less maneuverable) than a pedestrian.
The last thing some team wants to deal with when their robot has crapped out and they've got 15 minutes before staging is some overpaid turkey trying to get through on a glorified toy.
Good going, Dean. Talk about anti-marketing.
