Ok, got my engine and trans back in 83 SC. Have it set up and it runs and sounds fine after a complete reseal, backdated exhaust, new clutch, transmission rebuild, etc, etc. In general, I am very pleased with how things came out.
Yesterday I had it running outside for about 20 minutes while I set the fuel mixture with a new CO tester I just purchased. After putting it back in the shop, I noticed some oil where it had been parked.
Sure enough, the small crank seal behind the belt pulley is leaking. It is a new Ehlring seal I put in as part of the reseal. The old one, which I am pretty sure was the original, was not or leaking.
Today, I took it apart. It seems to be leaking where the seal sits in the case, not around the crankshaft. When I removed the seal there was quite a lot of oil trapped between the seal and the oil supply ports for the rear bearing.
I have rebuilt a lot of German and Italian engines over the last 45 years, and never seen this before.
I have a new Porsche OEM seal on the way, and I guess I will use a non hardening sealer where the seal fits into the case.
Does anyone have experience with this.
