I adjusted the valves in my DD Honda last year. And I think I did a better job than the factory Honda mechanic who last touched the valvetrain. My Civic had its engine rebuilt with a new block a couple years back. Apparently due to some casting or metallurgy flaw, for several years Civics were known to develop fine cracks in the block, which would leak out all the coolant. This happened to me at 9.5 years and 132K miles of ownership. Honda actually extended a goodwill warranty out to 10 years a after purchase.
Fortunately, I caught the problem while driving on the highway but before the motor overheated. So Honda was willing to replace the leaky engine block.
Maybe a year after they rebuilt it, I noticed increasing valve noise. Worse on acceleration. So finally when the car was due for an oil change, I decided to adjust the valves. I think one of the adjusting screws had absolutely no tension on it. Now the engine is audibly smoother, and no clattering on acceleration. Because access is good on a transverse I-4, it took my shade tree hands maybe an hour to do.
