Learned the hard way at about age 18, summer working for a road contractor. Me and Fred got sent out and dropped off at the long distant gravel/dirt road to the haul pit. There was a manhole in the road that had suffered numerous truck strikes that needed the cast ring and cover back in place with mortar. It was a long scorching hot dry afternoon, we had nothing to drink. Fred was happy with our work and proceeded to light up a joint. I took a few tokes with him. Then we attempted to place the cover on the manhole. Drop it on 3. 1....2.....3......OWWWWW!!!! Fred didn't get his fingers out in time. So I lifted the cover enough to get his fingers out but not mine. OWWWWWW!!! Fred managed to lift it off of my fingers and keep his out of the way. The end result.....2 dudes with a good buzz hollering the hurt walking in circles shaking our fingers in pain. Ahhhh the good old days!
