Having done some further reading it would seem that the problem is in the extra loop of wire that I made up to join the sensor cable to the loom.

Canbus systems, I am told, do not take kindly to having the cable length changed and extra resistance placed within the cable both of which I did by adding two connectors and two soldered joints in between the loom connection and the connection that was pre existing on the sensor cable.

Fortunately the two sensor cables are almost the same length to within a few MM. The next step is to remove the connector from the RT cable by extracting the pins from the connector block and to replace said pins in a spare connector for an S that can join onto the bike's loom.

I first need to check the resistance within the new sensor cable to make sure my lash up did no damage.

I'm not out of the woods yet as I can see a visible difference in the thickness of both sensor cables, the old one from the S being thicker. This may also be a problem as a change in the wire gauge can also affect the pulse sent to the ECU. Please don't ask me how.
