the 996 prices for an early 2000 model are about the same as a boxster s tip
which is my desired model.
Since i kept my 78 sc for 27 years I'd be really happy with the 911.
So is it the ugly headlights that keep the prices down?
Most have 80,00 miles or more, which means little to me if there are service records and car fax.
for example 2001 coupe red/tan with 119k on it is listed at $19,000

I would look at the 996. I had a Boxster, it was a dedicated two seater which I felt was too space limiting for me.
While 996s can be a bit of a plain jane, they have really gained in popularity and slowly increased in value due to their performance and very livable personalities.
As you stated with service records and a car fax you should be able to find a very nice one for under $20,000.
