The trick I always used was to grease the hell out of the cables and to take a flexable rifle brush and clean the crap out of the guide tubes.
Then glue in the guide pin to the rail and insert it into its slot.
Then run the cable down the channel - with the guide pin in place, the cable is lines up with the guide tube.
What special nut are you talking about? I'm not sure what part you mean.
