I traversed the Suez back in the late 80's on the USS Dewey DDG-45. As part of this experience, the captain and executive officer were allowing 'regular' folks (i.e., non-bridge personnel) to have an opportunity to take the helm and drive our ship through the Suez. I left the aft engine room and headed up, and after getting instructions on
what to do, I was steering the ship through the Suez!!! That was a wonderful experience! We were issued laminated cards indicating we had journeyed through the Suez Canal... that experience was a LOT less painful that what it took to get my Shellback card.
I remember seeing many burnt military tanks on one side of the canal. We had to anchor out a wait a couple of days in order to take our turn to go through.
