We used a stack of 3 soda cans, back when soda cans were made of steel with the evil detachable pull tab (Paul, we also used the pull tabs, bent just right, sandwiched in scotch tape for easy retrieval to "cheat" the coin laundry driers at MSU....but that's another story!) properly vented and assembled with duct tape, fueled with zippo lighter fluid to launch tennis balls from our "cannons". Probably early 70's. I think about it now, and that was certainly "technology" that travelled from neighborhood kid to neighborhood kid.
