Some of those stories are overblown, but some are all too true, others simply examples of the design ahead of technology of the day.
I've been to several clone home McMansion subdivisions, one where the Hardiboard was shrinking leaving 1/2" gaps, and in another subdivision the wood trim adjacent to the vinyl siding was rotting out after only 10 years because of poor detailing. Yea, the whole wall behind it was rotting too, black mold everywhere.
More than half the houses in the U.S. have mold problems, much of this is building code related (
it's not perfect).
Just say'n, going with so-called conventional "follow the herd" approaches have their share of failings.

The ramp goes all the up through this house. I took several rolls of film and slide film of this building when visiting just over 20 years ago.
