I started with a Nordic Trak that my neighbor gave me in 1994 or 95. After using it a few times I understood why he gave it away, and I passed it on.
I got a treadmill, but then started running outside which was way more fun so I got rid of the treadmill.
I had to stop running when I had the joints in my toes replaced, so I got a Concept II rower that I really, really liked.
Had to stop using the rower due to the arthritis in my back.
My back keeps me from walking more than a couple of miles a day so I got a stationary recumbent bike.
The gadgets I have now are the bike, some weights, and an inversion table and I get along well with them.
The best workouts I had were being out on the road running alone, good weather, bad weather - it made no difference, I was out every day. People wanted me to run with them, but I was happier alone.
For a healthy person I would recommend a Concept II over anything else I've seen. You can get a great workout at whatever pace you choose, from loafing along to making the walls shake. I have a feeling a lot of those expensive electronic gadgets are going to end up at garage sales.
