Favorite songs of course include Alice's Restaurant. Also Fortunate Son, Run Through the Jungle, most anything by CCR, War! (What's it Good For?), Bungle in the Jungle, and When the Tigers Broke Free. I actually started reading about the battle of Anzio after hearing "Tigers" and was heartbroken to learn that it was historically accurate.

MRM you are just now finding this stuff out..I knew this stuff when I was in Middle School.
The Allies after being stalemated at Monte Casino decided on an end run landing at Anzio. It caught the Krauts with their pants down as the landing was unopposed and no Krauts were in the vicinity. Yet due to the cautious ineptitude of an American general who dug in instead of seizing the day to capture Rome gave time for the Krauts to contain the landing. The Krauts called it the biggest prisoner of war camp. It wasn't until June 44 that the stalemate was broken at Monte Casino and Rome was liberated.
The Krauts retreated in an orderly manner establishing a new defensive line further up the Italian peninsula. Which lasted till the end of the war. As an aside Dr Porsches contribution to Anzio was the deployment of his Elefant aka Ferdinand after Dr Porsche..as an effective tank destroyer with it's 88 MM gun. It had proven to be ineffective as an offensive weapon during the battle of Kursk in July of 43.
