You bet big — or little — on the Kentucky Derby on May 1 and lost, and now it appears your horse might have been beaten by a cheater. What happens now?

Well, when it comes to wagers, nothing.

Pari-mutuel wagering is unlikely to be affected.

Losing bettors won’t get their money back.

And, as unfair as that sounds, it gets worse: Your buddy who had the winner gets to keep his money, even though the horse he bet on, Medina Spirit, might have been dirty.

And a bettor who had money to win on second-place finisher Mandaloun, likely won’t cash that ticket, either.

According to the Courier-Journal of Louisville: The last time a Kentucky Derby winner was disqualified for a positive drug test (Dancer’s Image, 1968), the Kentucky Horse Racing commission ordered Forward Pass, the horse that crossed the finish line second in the race, be considered the winner of the 1968 Kentucky Derby, except for pari-mutuel payoffs.
