Back in the early 30's my grandma took my mother on a trip across the western US. Mom was around 10. They were in a Packard (grandma took care of the house of some rich folks. They went to Europe so they loaned grandma the car).
They hired some guy in Colorado Springs to drive them up. Mom said the trip up was great. Trip down was a bit too exciting.
