What variant did he get? Sorry, I have to be suspicious. Canada does not typically map the genome, so how is he sure he got a variant? And there are no instances I'm aware of where anyone has clearly proven or even hinted that the vaccinations do not protect against the existing variants, certainly not the known variants in Canada. Just the opposite appears to be true so far.
Did he get sick two weeks or more after his second shot? Up to that point you are not 'fully vaccinated'.
Also, there are 'lots' of instances of 'vaccinated' people testing positive, my son was one of them. There are also false positives, depending on the test type, and the 'cycle' factor. Alberta probably uses 38.
Remember, the vaccination does not stop you from getting COVID. You should not get 'as sick' as you might have without the vaccination, but you can in theory carry COVID.
