The space for the tires is the limiting factor, you could use any size wheel as long as the tire fits the allotted space
a secondary but still very important consideration is the torque cost of the wheel & tire, here it's more the tire, torque cost comes from mass and distance of the mass from the axis of rotation
when choosing tires, the OD is the most significant datum to consider, w/ stock engines and gearing try to keep tire OD under 25"
