I think Russell will be OK (psychologically). He doesn't seem as urgent (desperate?) as the reporters when asked about a poor showing. Not that he doesn't care; he's just got a calm, mature demeanor. I think he knows that everyone else knows he's got a crap car, and if put into something good (like the Mercedes), he can compete for wins straight away. So he's just biding his time.
But if his contract is up at the end of this year (or next), Mercedes junior or not, would another team swoop him up? Would Red Bull take him in place of Perez?
