The term comes from pilots crashing their planes into farm fields
and farmers claiming extraordinary sums of money from the Airforce to repay the damage to the field and crop, to the point where hte Airforce payed the equivalent sum that would have bought the entire farm.
hence.. pilot augured in.. and bought the farm.
