if you drain the engine case any oil coming out is the big Q
I think he's talking about the fender oil cooler since he mentions the thermostat.

Crank the engine (ignition and fuel system disabled) several times without running the engine, you should see at least 2 bar reading on the gauge. I agree with Tony about a mechanical gauge. I did that when I thought I had no oil pressure after an engine drop.
