I agree, but we're headed in exactly the opposite direction with regard to driver training. Vehicles are now being stuffed with all sorts of electronic 'nannies' to make up for the general lack of driving skills exhibited by today's motorists. Instead of requiring that drivers actually demonstrate some reasonable level of skill before granting or renewing a license, many states are practically giving them away in cereal boxes.
My late FIL, who was legally blind, was actually granted a license renewal appointment here in CA. When my wife (his daughter) told the DMV that they were about to renew the license of a blind man, they replied,
"Don't worry, we'll have someone help him thru the vision test"
Manufacturers are catering to this new crop of distracted drivers with questionable skills in other ways too. A hundred years ago, owner's manuals instructed people on how to adjust valves, change the oil, and replace the spark plugs. Nowadays, manuals have to warn people not to drink the contents of the vehicle's battery!
