After the reading the thread -

If my objective is cold drinks in a cooler -

Drain enough water to make space for the ice to add.
Unless, that water is not cold anymore.
Then maybe dump some, but not all.
Get some of that ice at the bottom melted faster.

A lot would depend on warm water from a long sit vs ice has melted and a cold water.
