There is not a single breed of dog in modern society that in any way resembles a naturally occurring breed. Maybe huskies, malamutes, and a few others. The rest have all been very carefully bred by us, for very specific purposes. Terriers to hunt foxes and such, retrievers to fetch waterfowl shot by their masters, pointers to find birds for their masters, and on and on. Pit Bulls are no exception. They have been bred, by man, for a purpose - to fight. Rather than quelling and breeding out aggressive tendencies, breeders have sought to bring out those tendencies. They have been very successful.

It is no more a Pit Bull's "fault" that it has killed a child than it is a lion's "fault" that it killed an antelope. It's what they do. It's all on us to understand what we are dealing with and to deal with it accordingly. Pit Bulls can be responsibly owned by responsible people who understand what they are. But why? We have outlawed dog fighting, and for good reason. As such, this breed no longer serves any legitimate purpose, and should be eliminated altogether. Outlaw their breeding, demand that all current examples be spayed and neutered, and let the breed die off. Grandfather any living ones in, but after some reasonable period of time wherein they should all be gone, simply round up any that are seen and euthanize them. Enough is enough.
