When I clean a rifle barrel, I lie the gun on it's side, gently( gently) feed the rubber coated cleaning rod down the barrel from the crown end. I screw the brass brush on then pull it through the barrel. Same again a could of times allowing the brush to follow the rifling.
This way any crud comes out the end of the barrel not around the inside of the bolt area/trigger assembly - no bore guide needed. The rod is perfectly straight because it's being pulled not pushed. Three times and the barrel is clean. If it's not clean you have other issues and may need a solvent type cleaner.

The worst thing to do is feed it in from the breech end and merrily scrub away changing direction half way along the barrel.
