I keep the chambers pretty clean on my rimfire autoloaders simply because it will eventually affect function if I don't. My revolvers, bolt actions, and lever guns (along with the full barrel on my autoloaders), will only get cleaned if I'm switching brands of ammo and thereby introducing a different bullet lube. Bore condition is important in any rifled arm shooting lubricated lead bullets. Cleaning them alters that, and it can often take quite a bit of shooting to re-establish it and regain accuracy.
