Colt started chambering these guns for 38 Special in April of 1904 when the Officers Model was introduced. The easiest way to tell if you have a 38 Colt gun or a 38 Special gun is to look at the chambers in the cylinder. If the chambers are bored the same size all the way thru, then it is for 38 Colt. If there is a small "lip" at the front of the cylinder then it was made to use the 38 Special. Also, you can measure the bore. If it measures about .357" then use the inside lubed 38 Special ammo. If it (the bore) measures in the upper .360s then use the older outside lubed "heeled" bullets.
