1986 Diesel Golf bought new, drove until 1990, and the nozzles were different sizes then.

The big semi-trucks had even larger nozzles for their lower grade Diesel (Diesel #2).

I guess a mislabeled gas can could be an issue.

Leaded gas and unleaded gas nozzles were different sizes too back in the day. Good old government regulation and standards.
