I noticed the other day that the serpentine belt was running about 5mm off the front of the drive belt idle roller (on Engine Case ) lower and about the same off the tensioner pulley. The belt was completely on the drive belt idle roller (on Engine Console) upper.
I removed the belt and noted that the upper idle roller was bad - making noise and spinning freely when rotated. The lower idle roller and the tensioner idler were fine so I ordered a new upper idler and belt. The old belt was good but I thought if I'm doing the work just go ahead and replace the serpentine belt.
Did the work and the belt is still running about 5mm off the lower idle roller and the tensioner idle roller. The belt is completely on the upper idle roller. Don't know why I expected any different as I didn't change anything with the other two idle rollers.
The belt is running fine in all the grooved pulleys on the accessory items (alternator, water pump, power steering pump and air con compressor) as well as the crank pulley.
It is obvious that the car has been running this way for a while.
Is this a problem and what could be causing the belt to be running about 5mm off the front of the two idle rollers and not the top idle roller?
I am at a loss.
