The hatch on the civic was as big an opening as the Fit...the only exception is that the new Civic doesn't use the 'magic seats' that the Fit has. They don't disappear into the floor.

It’s not the opening. It’s the fact that a cube shaped space will give me the most cargo volume, inch for inch of overall vehicle length. Something with a sloping rear window won’t let me carry objects of a certain shape.
The Fit is more of a cube and may be better than the new Civic in this way.
