We got back home safely yesterday.

On Thursday even our neighbor called me with heart stopping news. He came home for lunch at 12:20 and our dogs came running up to him in his driveway. Fortunately he is a "dog guy" and said hi to them, and walked to the front door and rang the doorbell. When he got no answer he walked to the driveway side gate and it was left wide open. The dogs followed him into the back yard, and they went in the doggie door. No harm no foul. He closed the gate.

Today I pulled up the footage from the surveillance system. Starting at Thursday at noon and saw them bring the dogs back over. So I started playing it backwards to see when they first escaped.

The lady staying here was certainly not a captive, and she left at 10:30 AM to do whatever. 30 seconds later our male dachshund Reuben walked through the open gate and out to the front. He went to the street in front of our house and out of camera view for 5 minutes and then returned and went inside. He went exploring later at 12:08 and terrifyingly went around the corner towards the busy street, and disappears for 5 minutes. He finally returns to view and sniffs around in the front and goes back inside about 12:30. At 12:08 both dogs exit the doggy door, and go out front. The neighbor drives past at 12:20 and brings them back over at 12:24 after ringing the doorbell.

So that gate was open for at least a few hours. We are so dang lucky they did not just run off, get run over or kidnapped.

I am exporting the video files and trying to figure out how to encode the time stamps. I want to make a movie of the action for posterity, and to show that lady how lucky we all are. That gate shall remain locked anytime we leave. She will have to go through the house to get from front yard to back yard.

My wife will make something knitted for the neighbor and I told him he is our hero.
