My God, I just realized how ancient I really am: when I was in the Army NG there were no porta potties and we actually had to dig our own latrines when on maneuvers. Being in Headquarters Company, I had the privilege of digging one for the officers use before I got to dig one for the enlisted guys (no gals back then, or else I would have gotten to dig 2 more).
Learning to dig a one man cat-hole was the subject of a "whole" day of Basic Training. I wonder if they even teach that anymore?
