It’s not green energy....it’s an alternative source of power delivery. A damn cool one but not one that’s going to save the world from fossils fuel usage. Why would there be that much invested in a bank of batteries that can only store enough power for 8 hrs of reserve for a town? Doesn’t make sense to me.

well I'm pretty sure they aren't meant to be charged by fossil fuels, but are meant to fill the gap where solar and wind energy have fluctuations , eg to either supplement when there's a drop in supply or increased peak need.
So if anything they are meant to reduce the need on fossil gas fired plants that are now often used to ramp up when solar or wind is dropping off (nights, wind still)..
So they aren't meant to support an entire town on their own, they are to supplement other supplies when there's shortage and to charge from those other supplies when there's to much supply.
Think windmills that are often throttled down when there's not enough draw on the network, they would be left full power to charge these batteries.
