Loyal to the crown in 1608, he followed James' orders to occupy Tory Island and control the Irish forces.
His plan was a sinister one: he orchestrated a quarrel amongst the two main Irish forces and when the battle was over he slaughtered the victors.
In recognition of his loyal service to the crown, He was created a Baronet in 1622.
He resided in Ireland and built the castle Ardtermon on the shore of Drumcliff bay in Sligo, just two miles from where Lissadell house now stands.
