This includes you flying to Ca and picking up in person. This is federal law, not one of California's crazy restrictions.

If I was coming back with a U-haul full of stuff, they'd be in the U-haul full of stuff. I wouldn't be worried about it. They wouldn't be on top at the back. They would be buried. You'd have to unload the whole thing to get to them.
