No absolute proof, though many believe there is enough evidence that after the first wave the virus mutated and became very good at infecting people and also more virulent.
Covid 19 in 1918 would have been disastrous. The 1918 flu in 2020 would have been far less deadly.

In 1918, they would’ve love to have any useful medical care, at all. They had essentially none.
The mutations are less virulent, not more. Which is the normal order of things.
