I try to leave lots of space. On one recent trip the car in the other lane hit some debris, and hurled it right at my lane. No chance to dodge it. Ker thump. It was a large tire shred from a 18 wheeler but it went right under the car and I found a black mark on the crossmember and no damage. Pure luck.
