Until you encounter one with the fixture(s) in between (need 4 wires from fixture to fixture but only 3 to the switches, either end).
And then there's the 4-way. We did one of those with one switch being a dimmer that controlled the lights no matter which one you used to switch them on. Took a couple hours to figure that one out. There were 3 entrances to the kitchen.
