Dang it.
The trusty El Camino has another issue. After just 35 years and 372,000 miles the dang windshield wiper switch quit. Unlike the fan switch was was a cinch to replace, they start building the car around the damn switch, and then add in a connection to the turn signals, the dimmer switch, the cruise control, wipers of course, but also the delay and squirter function. Of course the steering wheel has to come off, (with a puller) the lock plate for the ignition switch, (special tool) the ignition key, the turn signal and then I get to drop the steering wheel off the mounts to have access to get the wires for the wiper switch up the channel to the connections to the wire harness.
It is a total rubrics cube of individual pieces to reassemble. One of the real challenges is getting the clip over the switch for the actual ignition, with the high beam dimmer rod in place, and get the tilt steering wheel spring held down and aligned. It is a very frustration task.
Even more annoying, if you search YouTube for instruction there are endless instructional vids on how to do the turn signal switch, but not one, not a single one on how to R&R the wiper switch for a delay switch on the tilt column setup.
Right now I have the steering wheel parts all over the bed of the Elky, and the floorboards and I am almost to the point of starting reassembly. I will be out there all day I suspect getting it back together. And there is just no professional shop I could have taken it to that I know of. The joys of owning an old car.
I have had it apart once before long ago because the column on G body cars all get loose and four bolts have to be removed and red locktighted. I am almost back to those bolts. I did that repair over 20 years ago so I don't remember much other than it was a real pain to do.
